Living In Ucluelet

The Pacific Rim region of Vancouver Island sees around 1 million visitors each year, but locals still consider Ucluelet a ‘real working town.’ The fishing and logging industries generate a significant amount of local revenue not dependent on tourists. They’re what give this award-winning community its no-frills, down-to-earth character.

Ucluelet’s location, far removed from any urban environment, is what shapes the local lifestyle. There are no superstores, no billboard ads, no traffic jams. Ucluelet is, literally, the end of the road. It’s a great place to escape city living, and a great place to raise a family.

Shopping

You won’t find any megastores here now or probably ever. The closest Wal-Mart is over the mountains in Port Alberni, a 1 ½ hour drive. Ucluelet residents shop the small locally owned boutiques and restaurants scattered throughout town.

Community activities

Year-round festivals and events celebrate everything from the Pacific gray whale migration to live local music. Ucluelet also has a very active Parks & Recreation program with youth soccer, little league baseball, new multi-use sports fields, a new skate park and new basketball courts. Classes include tai chi, yoga, Pilates, badminton and more.

Schools & services

Residents of Ucluelet and nearby Tofino share schools and services. Among the two communities you’ll find schools, doctors, dentists, a hospital, medical clinic, libraries, churches, community newspapers and post offices.
