Ucluelet - Tofino Area: Beaches and Parkland

Natural wonders loom large in this thinly populated region. You don’t have to wander too far outside of Ucluelet to find sandy beaches, remote islands, unique ecosystems and fresh water lakes.

Long Beach

Ucluelet is situated between Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park and Barclay Sound. Famous for its 10 kilometers (6 miles) of white sand, Long Beach draws beachcombers and surfers from around the world. Trails take hikers from the beach into lush forests.

Broken Group Islands

The remote Broken Group Islands, another unit of the national park in Barclay Sound, includes more than 100 little rocky and forested islands that can only be reached by boat. Some have spectacular beaches. The Broken Group is a top destination for kayakers and scuba divers.

Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Guided hikes, kayak tours and nature cruises explore the diverse range of ecosystems found in this protected area north of Ucluelet, extending from Long Beach to Hot Springs and beyond. You can spot vast species of wildlife in the national park, 16 provincial parks and two ecological reserves here.

Kennedy Lake

Adjacent to Clayoquot Sound you’ll find Kennedy Lake, the largest body of fresh water on the island. The steep mountains that rim the lake create a stunning backdrop for swimming, fishing and windsurfing. Ucluelet locals frequent the beaches, some of which are part of Pacific Rim National Park. In the fall you can see the beach spawning of sockeye and maybe spot the black bears that visit frequently during this time.
